Laser is good for monitoring horizontal shift and dial indicators setup on mag bases monitoring the unit that needs shifting also works.
There are some very nice features about lasers. It's just price isn't one of them ;-D.
Probably all that can afford a laser system should have one. And, although I have never formally endorsed one specific one - the FixturLaser is probably #1 in quality and ease of use.
Sam, thanks for the comment. Sorry I'm just now seeing it. I see what you're saying and agree if there's no (or a very small) horizontal move to make. If you have to make a horizontal move, we can leave everything loose and monitor the move live. I'm all about working smarter. Keep the comments coming! Also, VibrAlign has a blog we're getting started. Some tips and tidbits on alignment in general. Your comments would be very welcome over there as well.
This is good. The dual beam system has an edge in my opinion.
If I may; I'd like to add a comment for consideration. This is one I use. I've been teaching alignment for over 25 years and performing for 42 years.
When making the vertical move; evaluate the machines for rigidity and their physical size. From this determine which bolts to loosen first. Generally the front to back foot dimension is greater than the side-to-side - do the shortest first as this gives the greatest machine flexibility. On many or most (not all) machines you can leave two bolts tight and make the shim change on the remaining two with the least amount of shim requirement. This gives the best advantage to retain position. This works extremely well especially when there are no jacking lugs unless you have portable jacking lugs.

Thanks for the invite.
