Ther are a number of definitions as to what asset management is (or is not); and there will be differing views dependent upon whether you are talking about hardware, software, real estate, finances or people. However, the underlying principle of asset management is that the product, data, or service is that it has value to its owner and must be looked after in the most cost effective way possible for its remaining life.

I think that an asset manager have to know very well the objective of the enterprise, how do they think invest its money and how much return they expect. Based on that, he or she can direct the resources to maximize the asset value, taking in account the operations, maintenance, human resources, knowledge, training required to achieve the goals, and of course know very well the standar ISO 55000.

The core requirement for any asset manager (or anybody else with a different title responsible for assets) is the ability to link and drive profitability of their assets with executable asset strategy. The appreciation that every element of asset management directly influences profitability of their company is vital. Other important element is to manage teams that are cross functional - asset management has four components Asset Design Asset Commissioning Asset Usage/Maintenance and Asset...

Question: is there a difference between NORMAL WEAR and AGING?

John Reeve @TRM ·
In regards to asset condition, and trying to drill down into Causes of failure, I've created a hierarchy. In Level-1 of this hierarchy, two of my choices are: NORMAL WEAR AGING and others.... Please note I do NOT know the answer to this question. Thus I am asking for your opinions. Thanks in advance

Re: Question: is there a difference between NORMAL WEAR and AGING?

Joyce Brook ·
The short answer is yes, there is a very definite difference between normal wear and ageing, although there is a link between them . Normal wear is predicated on performance, whereas ageing is based on degradation of an asset WHETHER OR NOT it is in operation. A unit under normal wear conditions may only have a relatively short shelf life, and therefore – in the accepted terms of use – has not aged, but has exceeded it design and operational parameters. Normal wear is what the design expects...

Asset monitoring - a new approach

Reliability ·
Mention the phrase ‘asset data collection’, or even the more modern activity of ‘remote condition monitoring’, and you tend to see a blank look and eyes glaze over. Somehow the whole business of monitoring and recording assets is a ‘turn off’ when compared to other elements of railway engineering. It’s so much more exciting to be designing things at the forefront of technology, or project engineering the installation and commissioning of a new system. Being given the job of asset recording...

Re: Question: is there a difference between NORMAL WEAR and AGING?

I would say it is not either/or (not mutually exclusive). To my thinking, whenever normal wear has occurred, aging has occurred. Normal wear is one of many possible mechanisms for aging. Other possible mechanisms for aging might include: accelerated wear fatigue corrosion thermal aging etc (depends on what is aging). Sorry if I'm missing the point of the excercise.

Re: Question: is there a difference between NORMAL WEAR and AGING?

Probably. Whilt normal wear and ageing are not mutually exclusive, ageing does not have a dependency on wear.

Lessons in Handling Asset Management Information

Reliability ·
by Claire Gowson Asset Management Consultant at eAsset Management So, when was the last time you made a decision based on gut feel? That is, a choice based on what your intuition told you, rather than weighing up more obviously tangible or robust evidence. Was it choosing breakfast (yes – that is the most literal example of gut feel I could think of!)? Deciding whether you wanted a second date? Or was it hiring a new employee? There are some decisions in life where gut feel plays an...
