Asset monitoring - a new approach

Reliability ·
Mention the phrase ‘asset data collection’, or even the more modern activity of ‘remote condition monitoring’, and you tend to see a blank look and eyes glaze over. Somehow the whole business of monitoring and recording assets is a ‘turn off’ when compared to other elements of railway engineering. It’s so much more exciting to be designing things at the forefront of technology, or project engineering the installation and commissioning of a new system. Being given the job of asset recording...

Asset Hierarchy

Jim Perpinan ·
We are reshuffling the deck on our equipment groups within an industrial setting of a power plant and I am looking for any standards or industrial requirements to create an equipment Hierarchy to start with. So far I have a yes, on a equipment hierarchy by "Systems" that starts by highest asset value/cost and work down (on drill down). But I am aware of other hierarchy but need to get my hands on a few to test out. this will be going into a EAMS system. Any refinery templates out there?

Lessons in Handling Asset Management Information

Reliability ·
by Claire Gowson Asset Management Consultant at eAsset Management So, when was the last time you made a decision based on gut feel? That is, a choice based on what your intuition told you, rather than weighing up more obviously tangible or robust evidence. Was it choosing breakfast (yes – that is the most literal example of gut feel I could think of!)? Deciding whether you wanted a second date? Or was it hiring a new employee? There are some decisions in life where gut feel plays an...

The CMMS is a valuable database containing asset registers, asset failure history, asset criticality, spare part data, warranty information, asset age/installation-date/replacement cost, asset classification data, job plan libraries, PM/PdM...

Re: Question: is there a difference between NORMAL WEAR and AGING?

Joyce Brook ·
The short answer is yes, there is a very definite difference between normal wear and ageing, although there is a link between them . Normal wear is predicated on performance, whereas ageing is based on degradation of an asset WHETHER OR NOT it is in operation. A unit under normal wear conditions may only have a relatively short shelf life, and therefore – in the accepted terms of use – has not aged, but has exceeded it design and operational parameters. Normal wear is what the design expects...

Re: Question: is there a difference between NORMAL WEAR and AGING?

electricpete ·
I would say it is not either/or (not mutually exclusive). To my thinking, whenever normal wear has occurred, aging has occurred. Normal wear is one of many possible mechanisms for aging. Other possible mechanisms for aging might include: accelerated wear fatigue corrosion thermal aging etc (depends on what is aging). Sorry if I'm missing the point of the excercise.

Re: Question: is there a difference between NORMAL WEAR and AGING?

Joyce Brook ·
Probably. Whilt normal wear and ageing are not mutually exclusive, ageing does not have a dependency on wear.

Jim. ISO 14224 can provide you a good structure to see how the failure codes and hierarchy can be organised. Emerson's MRG Consulting also has a great value offering which can help you organise to validate the Master Equipment List followed Functional Locations/Area and then upload them into your CMMS. Let me know if you would like to know more about it. Cheers

Thank you, Vinman I have seen a lot of Uniformat II being used for smaller plants but its just not valid for a plant system because we do not use 90% of the hierarchy. This ISO 14224 seems to cover the bases and more.

Great to hear that Jim. ISO 14224 is more relevant to Oil and Gas Industry but is more universal in nature to be applied in other industry verticals. Wish you the best for your journey to organise the asset hierarchy. Shout out to me in case you need help me with the processes and templates.
