I tend to agree with John here.  There are just too many members to list birthdays, and as he says, no one cares.  While this is indeed a community, let's not try and make it into a social site.  We have plenty of that elsewhere.

This is not Facebook! I don't care about birthdays on this forum.

We hear you loud and clear but we want to try the birthdays for a little while - to see if we can create some wider commnication and connection.

 

We know it is not facebook (we were here first) but there is something connective about acknowledging best wishes on a birthday.   

 

You can view the calendar without birthdays by

 

1) Clicking Calendar LInk

2) Using the drop down menu to choose CRL events

3) Or you can subscribe to iCal

 

The site is planning major redesign to be more responsive (on all screens) in tate Sept/Oct 2015 so stay tuned.  We have your opinions on the borthdays noted and will include your view in all our of planning sessions.

 

 

These steps seem to be only a one-time change.  Exiting and reentering returns to a birthday list.

Keep in mind John, that this forum is not provided as simply a "service" to our community, but is a business. It's about page views and ad clicks, and to grow revenue they have to expand the user base.  So while we benefit, profit is still important.

And so a balance has to be struck between growing the user base, and "running off" the people who have made this board successful.

What if the top 40 or 50 posters here simply went somewhere else? That's doable you know.

I would not be interested in changing anyone's opinion about what these forums are because making your own meaning is what makes them so cool.

I can state 100% clearly that these forums have been delivered as a service to the community and costs have never been covered.  If it's a business - it's a bad one!   Maybe I should start a vibe service company!

That said we are crystal clear that there are a world of options out there for people to relate, network, share etc....

I am active in some of these options and I get great (and different) value from them.   We encourage and fully support any and all knowledge sharing no matter what the venue and forum. 

We are very proud to be the custodial hosts of these forums and the members can count on us.
