Cleanliness Targets for Marine Gearbox

Hello,

What are your recommendations for ISO 4406 cleanliness of a Marine gearbox all I can find are targets for industrial or mobile gearboxes.

Hi Marksl,

We monitor Navy drives and the target there is 18/16/13, if the drive is in a smaller pleasure boat type application maybe a 19/17/14 but that would depend upon the value of the drive.

Typically we find the breather filtration of the marine drive are usually inadequate, breather filtration should be < 1 µm as the lubrication film formed in highly loaded area like bearing thrusts and loaded gear sets will usually be > 1 µm.
