Baseline only. You can't correlate the RPVOT value of a new oil to the life of the oil in-service. Only as an in-service test to help determine remaining useful life.

The test results have a high degree of variability, up to +/-22% I believe, and the test is not designed to enable a comparison between the in-service oxidisation stability between different oils. The oil suppliers also say that the data sheet published values are typical only, and that the actual values vary from batch to batch. I believe most use this test as a part of their batch quality control, but nontheless, the value of your new oil may differ from the published figure.

Also, there is some published informatiom out there which indicates that some oils with a lower initial RPVOT value can actually have better in-service stability, performance and life than other oils which start off with a higher value.

It is a lubricating oil condition test. = Rotating Pressure Vessel Oxidation Test. The test accelerates the oxidisation process in the oil with the aid of pressure, temperature and a copper catalyst to simulate ageing or the oil. The time taken for the pressure to drop a specified amount in the pressure vessel is then reported in minutes (equates to a given consumption of oxygen).

I would include RPVOT in the test slate of a new (unused) baseline sample. It's always good to have the info in hand just in case. Cheap insurance. I also like to take a sample fairly quickly after an oil change and the unit has some run time to look and see what maybe going on. For example quite often a resevoir cleaning is not a effective as advertized so you might have carryover of cleaning fluid or residual contaminants such as dirt or varnish.
