The identification of base oil viscosity plays an important role in selecting an oil or grease. DN factor (DN Number) is used to identify the right base oil viscosity for the lubrication of a bearing. For a DN factor less than 1 million, grease is preferred. Oil lubricants are opted when the DN factor is over 1 million.

Spherical roller thrust bearings are very special designs that produce enormous amount of shear stress on the lubricants. Since the pump is vertical, the thrust bearing must also be vertical. Retention of lubricant in the contact zone is very critical and grease is the preferred choice for your application.

Antifriction and Journal bearings:

Journal bearings are suggested in very heavy radial load areas and aren’t used in heavy thrust load conditions. A discussion with bearing maker would be ideal to know if journal bearings support thrust load conditions.

I hope you have the DN calculation formula. In case if you don’t, please find it on the link shared.
